Horizon Forbidden West - a formulaic and unambitious sequel (CRITIQUE)
Horizon Zero Dawn was my game of the year for 2017, so as you might expect, I was really looking forward to Forbidden West. It did not live up to expectations.

    The one change that would have turned this from decent to great: Actually running with the idea. And trusting the brains of your players. Rather than subsequently nerfing it for playtesters who found the very concept to be "tedious". And in parts didn't even realize they were stuck in a loop. You know, initially you WERE tasked to piece it all together yourself. As it is, the real loop of this game is a tutorial you cannot ever escape. And as it is, I don't think it would be as easy as making the "hand-holding" more optional throughout. See Gamespot's "The redesign that saved Deathloop" feature. You've got to wonder how "A crack in the slab" in D2 ever made it through a process like that, letting you actually engage with time and space in its own and far more engaging way. This is akin to Hollywood recutting Christopher Nolan's "Memento" into chronological order, as test audiences were confused. And it's showing that video games as medium are still rather immature yet. Luckily Larian and even FromSoft more recent have shown that there's a way beyond maximum handholding and maximum accessibility. Those are fine -- but not when they're the default modus operandi. A Sherlock Holmes kind of game that connects all the dots for you or makes it trivial would be failure by design. Larian even THRIVED in parts by letting players off the leash, finding creative ways around challenges. All the stories of players stacking boxes etc. to get into places and similar were free marketing for them which they fully embraced. In a market like that, there's no logical reasons for ImmSim-design to be niche by default. Unfortunately, Bethesda more recent gave the Indiana Jones game to Machine Games. When Arkane would have been the perfect fit -- see also Thief's grave robbery kind of missions as an early template to start from.

    The first game puts you into the shoes and gameplay of an updated version of the original that even have jake armitage present. The second is a quality of life improvement and Story improvement on the first we actually get a A stable crew to work with and a bit more of an involved story. The last one polishes everything to a beautiful shine and gives us a very much involved. Storyline that doesn't really affect the rest of the world, so much as it does. The player specifically first. The player is barely affecting the world. Then the player has their own little thing. And then in the final one, it affects them directly. I think that's a pretty good progression. When it comes to the concept of story, you start off as a no, nothing that really does nothing in the greater scheme of things next stage. You progress. To something a bit bigger and a bit better and final stage something a little more personal. What I like is that you can carry on your character from each and every play through to the next part of the story. Essentially, meaning that your characters built up throughout the whole thing. So you start on Easy Mode for the first game. You beat it, you upload shadow fall. You choose to port your character over but cause you realize your character's kind of stronger. You bump up the difficulty to medium. You beat that game and then you start up. The last one Hong Kong returns.Your character now has 2 campaigns under their belt.Medium won't be difficult enough to give you a challenge so you bump it up to hard mode. You beat that 1 and then you realize you figured it out. You could probably do it all over again on hardcore mode right from the beginning as in nobody as a nothing, so you go back and you try to do it that way and you get stopped each and every time because the game's final difficulty is specifically designed to ensure that only people who have basically. Put hundreds of hours into this game. Or found a guide online can truly cheat it.

    Gosh I hate the art style and direction of these games, it is so cringe inducing, even though on a technical level, I am sure it pushing plenty of polygons. Mario Wonder looks ten times better than this, heck I think Metroid Prime Remastered looks better than this thing. All of the human characters look like they have been hit with an ugly stick. Oh well, I have been skipping AAA games because felt too samey and generic, and this one is no exception.

    I waited until I got a ps5 to play this, as HZD was(and still is,) my favorite game of all time. I think I can summarize the problem with FW: it disconnects EVERYTHING. The story is complex, but the gameplay is handholdy. The combat is difficult, but you can jump off an 100ft cliff and not take damage(even on vary hard-Aloy damage.) All of the crafting components are different, and even the damage types. The game says: "use brain to figure out puzzle," but immediately tells you that you need help. All of these things disconnect you from the world... because it doesnt make sense, and ultimately insults you as a player. But yet the reading of the lore(as well as the main story sometimes) is ultra complex, and requires either: excellent comprehension, or multiple reads. It is all unrealiable. You can't be sure of the ground you walk on, nor the abilities contained upon it. And literally, even: make Aloy walk around and her feet will "catch" on the slightest stair or rock...this is so annoying because the game doesnt want you to take your time. If you "jog" over said stair or rock, its fine...once again, taking away connection to the world. They put things in the game that were not even thought about the way they were thought about in HZD. One of the biggest reasons ZD is so good, is that everything has a purpose and stands on that foundation and is reliable. Everything in the game is not changing for the sake of it. It doesn't insult you or hold you back; it just isn't afraid. FW is afraid to be what it IS. I dont hate FW, but it is quite disappointing...all story elements aside( i mean, you can't dare compare ZD to anything else out there if you go in blind.) I cant help but think they were trying so hard to bring people in on FW, that it created things that have no vision behind it...even though I believe it is the most amazing game world I have ever seen, experienced, or read about. The artistic and creative detail of the world is unlike anything else...but it doesnt "feel" like it is with so many disconnects present. Even disconnect to the first game thru the crafting and weapon relabeling. I actually wouldve like the ability to have a smaller weapon wheel, like the first game, or just something where every cardinal direction led to selecting a weapon.. (whoever thought of 6 as the amount were not thinking.) Then, press a button to select different ammos, or let me equip different ammos to weapons so I only see 4 ammo types on the wheel, or 8 or whatever I want equipped. 6 is not intuitive at all and makes everything really hard to select. Just 8 weapons, and tap a button to change ammo types at anytime(wheel or not)..same for skills. Keep the weapon wheel simple and fast. I didnt even know about the hitboxes, etc...but I have gotten pretty frustrated at how it just felt cheap.That slowmo showed me that it actually is..REALLY cheap. also, good video. Excellent points. Im 120hrs in, still havent beat it, but already getting frustrated by mechanics. :/

    2 things are annoying in this game. The drones and the helmets. There is no reason to exist, they just cripple the game. Not to mention that many types of modern ammunition, will go through a helmet, like a hot knife through butter. And judging by the sound, they are wearing metal helmets from WW2.

    Your "criticism" regarding the "Aug Lives Matter" and "Mechanical Apartheid" stuff falls apart spectacularly when you consider the fact that most of the Augmented people are infact NOT "the privileged". A large portion of the population was actually forced into getting augmented. For example, the prostitutes in Human Revolution and those dead construction workers in Dubai. They were all forced into it by their employers. Then you also have to consider the massive costs of Neuroprozyne and the fact that most people are unable to afford it. For example, the beggars you see in Prague and Golem city. I suggest you pay more attention to those NPCs and the non-essential emails because it provides a LOT of context and details to the world of Deus Ex.

    Mordin not having any compassion? Have you actually played the game?? He had so much compassion that his work with the genophage lead him into an existential crisis, which caused him to study philosophies and religions and to open a clinic because he felt the need to atone for his deeds. The fact that he justified his work does not make him cold, he simply had to make an incredibly hard choice, one which he didn't made lightly. He was well aware of the ambiguous morality of his genophage modification and the genophage itself and he didn't close his eyes to the consequences of his work, he just considered it the most viable solution for everyone. He even participated in several recon operations in order to see the results of the modification for himself, even though he was discouraged to do so by the STG.

    One of my greatest problems with ME2 that I never heard anyone talking about is the fact that it is incredibly unstable. I had 4 versions of this game: the original disc version, the trilogy edition, the Origin version and the legendary edition and all of them crashed constantly during battles of main missions. I literally had to play every main mission at least 3 times because of it, sometimes over 10 times. It's infuriatingly frustrating.

  • @BarelloSmith
    @BarelloSmith 22 дня назад

    You got some things wrong about Mordin. He was very well aware of the consequences of his actions even before joining Shepard. He personally visited Tuchanka many times before to see the situation for himself, even though the STG didn't deem it necessary and he was always conflicted about his work. That's why he started to study philosophies and religions, that's why he opened a clinic on Omega and that's why he volunteered for a suicide mission: It was his way of atoning for his actions. Yes, in ME2 he was convinced that his actions where justified and the only viable solution, but nonetheless he was aware of the problematic ethics of his work. In my opinion Mordin his by far the best character in franchise and one of the best characters in gaming generally speaking.

    The 2007 version looked like straight trash. I'm glad it ended up the way it did, but.... it still went too far away from its roots. So sad. I hope they release the new one with Michael Ironside, and it gets back to a proper realistic stealth action game.
